The Association is a worldwide club of owners of sailing and motor craft designed by the New York naval architects, Sparkman & Stephens Inc. It was formed in England at the Cowes Classics Rally of 1993 by four devoted owners of S&S designed cruiser-racers, but it quickly expanded to encompass owners of sailing craft of S&S design in many countries

Membership in 2018 was around the 270 mark, current members including owners of some of the most renowned S&S one-off racing designs, as well as many who own production yachts that have made their mark in racing or in other ways..

Three world circumnavigation records are currently held by S&S 34s, the most recent being for the youngest solo, unassisted circumnavigation of the world by Jesse Martin of Melbourne, Australia, in an S&S 34. Honorary Life Member Jon Sanders, also from Australia, holds the world record for his 10 th circumnavigation in his 39 foot S&S sloop Perie Banou II completed in 2018; he is also the oldest circumnavigator in the world, a testament to the quality of S&S designs.
